Packers Season Ends with Another Playoff Collapse Print E-mail

The Green Bay Packers had high expectations going to San Francisco in the divisional round of the playoffs and woefully underperformed, getting shellacked by the 49ers 45-31 and ending the Packers 2012 campaign. We all know the causes of death, but we still have to do the autopsy here. So let’s get started with the grisly postmortem, shall we?

The Packers re-asserted themselves, adjusted the game plan and executed well in rebounding to beat Minnesota in the Wild Card round of the playoffs Saturday night. Everyone knows the primary storyline coming into the game was Adrian Peterson and his shredding of GB in the two previous contests. The job was made easier with the scratch of Christian Ponder and the start of QB Joe Webb in his place. Green Bay dominated, didn’t have any injuries to note, and have momentum going into the Divisional Round.

In the final regular season game at Lambeau Field of the 2012 campaign, the Packers utterly annihilated an under-manned woeful Tennessee team that was blown off the field in the first quarter. Still, the pundits always say that you still play whoever’s on your schedule and we did and pummeled them. For me, a good old-fashioned ass-whipping is a great and highly enjoyable feeling and I think the team needed a real cathartic blowout like this. Seldom in the NFL do these games occur, so savor it folks!

What started out as a punt fest ended up a convincing 21-13 victory that was stronger than would the score would otherwise indicate. In the 186th matchup of the “primordial foes” (as the esteemed and eloquent Lee Remmel would put it), the Packers had a pretty well rounded win with both offense and defense rounding into shape. As a result, we’ve now won 6 straight against Chicago, including 8 of the last 9, and this is the third season sweep of the Bears in the last 4 years. Incidentally, we’re only 4 games off from tying up the all-time series as well, which presently sits at 87-91-6. So on a balmy day in the Windy City, the Packers once again topped the Bears.

It wasn’t so much a football game as it was a chess match in the snow at Lambeau. What is it about snow and seeing your breath on a Sunday night that is so energizing? Last night, we witnessed what some might call an ugly unconvincing win, but what I saw was a chess match unfold in Green Bay, with the Packers taking the hits from the Lions, hanging tough, responding and staying together as a team, and triumphing. This game reminded me why—in subtle and sometimes not so subtle ways—football is the ultimate team sport, where teamwork, coaching, strategy, scheme and old-fashioned toughness go a long way and where all of those facets are required to congeal in order to win.

Leading into this game, the Packers have had great recent success against the Purple Pansies from up north, notably Aaron Rodgers who has become  Viking killer. So back at home after a two-game road trip, I think we all expected the Pack to register a convincing win on this first game in December. It was a gritty victory, indeed, and no win against a division opponent is without merit, but we certainly had some continued areas of concern. Let’s get to it!

Well, a 38-10 drubbing isn’t what I wanted to wrap up the Thanksgiving weekend. There’s a lot to talk about, so let’s get to it. I’ve not tried to break down Xs and Os in this installment too much. I’m also going to delve into the depths of despair as well as put on a happy face, so bear with my bipolar commentary today. You’ll want to slam a bottle of Jagermeister & jump off a ledge reading this and you’ll also have—in the worlds of the immortal Al McGuire—seashells and rainbows and I’ll try to blow smoke up your butts and tell you everything’s going to be alright.
